What Are You Missing on Daufuskie Island?

Daufuskie Island, a tiny 5,000 acre South Carolina Sea Island, is located just across the Calibogue Sound from Hilton Head. For vacationers truly looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the more populated tourist destinations, Daufuskie Island is the place to go! Take a step back in time and experience the unspoiled beauty and awe of this unique S.C. island.

A great day trip from Hilton Head, getting to Daufuskie Island is half of the fun! You can’t drive to this secluded Island paradise, you have to take a ferry (or private boat) from Hilton Head Island for a 50-minute boat ride where you will see dolphins, pelicans, oyster beds and shrimp boats along the way!

Once you cross the Calibogue Sound and step off the boat (The Delta Lady) onto Daufuskie Island, you immediately know this is unlike any other place you have ever been. You won’t see crowds, nightlife, hotels or even traffic on this secluded SC Sea Island. In fact, there aren’t very many cars at all on Daufuskie Island! The preferred way to explore the Island is along quiet, shady paths on golf carts or by bicycle.

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely day on Daufuskie Island with lunch at the Daufuskie Crab Company then an adventure filled with cultural history as they make their way on their golf cart down the dirt roads to the Island’s many historical locations. Popular sites include The Daufuskie History Museum, the Historic First Union African Baptist Church, which was built in 1881, the Mary Dunn Cemetery, established in 1790 as one of the first white burial grounds in the area, and the Bloody Point Lighthouse Museum and Silver Dew Winery. The Bloody Point Lighthouse, located at the southern tip of Daufuskie Island has story rich in history and duty. The most historic structures on the island are now open to the public instead of a being a private residence. Indigo and Sea Island Cotton has been planted and plans have been made to use one of the two small winery buildings as a wine shop while the other will be used to sell nautical items. It is exciting that people will finally be able to have a look around inside of these historical landmarks.

Guests will also enjoy the beaches of Daufuskie Island, where you will find isolated sandy shores where you can enjoy the splendor of the shore to yourself. See spectacular views of Sea Pines Plantation with its Harbour Town Lighthouse, and Tybee Island off the shores of Savannah, Georgia.
