The Best Part About Taking a Ferry on a Round Trip to Daufuskie Island and Back

The Delta Lady Ferry Boat, also known as a paddle wheeler, are old-fashioned boats that have a certain southern charm in the south. Our ferry has been renovated to offer modern comforts, such as interior bar and peek-over railing views of the seas beneath. So, in essence, the best part about taking a round-trip ferry to Daufuskie Island [and back] is the view. You can remain on the lower deck, or head to the upper deck for a higher perspective. There are salt marshes to oversee, lots of birds and other wildlife to awe over, and miles of seashores and Lowcountry ocean waters.

Several of our past guests have taken it upon themselves to offer words of wisdom and review to future ferry riders. You can find these reviews on TripAdvisor. One of our favorites comes from Carol from Washington DC, and she writes: “The paddleboat ride took about an hour to and from the island. Along the way, the captain provided interesting narration and history of the area and of Daufuskie Island. He pointed out dolphins in the distance, but none of them came in really close to the boat. Sunset arrives earlier in November and the timing on our return from the island gave us a spectacular sunset to enjoy as we pulled into the dock.”

Another TripAdvisor reviewer by the name of K. Purvis from Liverpool, New York pointed out, “This was a beautiful night. We had the boat to ourselves at first. We saw many dolphins and the captain slowed down and pointed them out. We stopped at an island to pick up people from a day trip and headed back. The sunset started to go down; stunning colors. More dolphins. Beautiful night.”

Don’t Miss These Activities on the Daufuskie Island

There are dozens of things to do and see when you dock on Daufuskie Island. And, depending on which ferry you took, you have anywhere from several hours to an entire night to explore your new surroundings. With that in mind, there are several must-see activities and places on Daufuskie Island that you shouldn’t miss.

  • Old Daufuskie Crab Company is a decades-old low-country seafood restaurant with years of cooking and fishing experiences. The entirety of their menu meals are homemade, with fresh-caught seafood that includes shrimp, deviled crabs, oysters, ahi tuna, and mahi-mahi. Their hush puppies are legend on the island, as are their fried shrimp tacos, fried okra baskets, and island crab stew.
  • The Bloody Point Lighthouse Museum sounds a little daunting but the history is rich and amazing. With histories rooted in Indian battles and slaveries, the lighthouse goes back hundreds of years, but there have been a few renovations to keep the two-story building intact and safe for tours. You will hear about local legends, historic facts, and a ghost story or two. This is a MUST-SEE!
  • Stop off for snacks and refreshments right off the ferry when you get to Freeport Marina. The General Store provides you with a bunch of eats and beverages, as well as souvenirs and beautiful views of the docks from a second-story gazebo.
